Pine Bluff Arsenal’s flexible production team allows for the efficient and quality production of a variety of smoke, illuminating and nonlethal munitions.
White Phosphorus: Pine Bluff Arsenal is currently the only facility in North America with the capability to fill white phosphorus munitions ranging from 60mm through 175mm. In late September 2005, Arsenal officials signed a $20 million contract for modernization of the WP production facility. This project is one of the largest investments in the Arsenal’s industrial capacity since the early 1980s.
Red Phosphorus: Red phosphorus munitions produced at the Arsenal are the L8A3 smoke screening grenade and the M819 RP smoke round for the 81mm mortar. The flexibility of existing production lines, however, allows the Directorate of Ammunition Operations to be readily adapted to handle additional munition types.
Bulk production of RP fill for loading into customer designed bodies is also possible. Bulk fill can be provided in either granulated or pelletized form.
Smoke munitions: PBA has the capability of mixing, filling, loading, assembling and packaging a wide variety of smoke munitions from 40mm to 175mm and hand grenades. These include colored smoke incendiary, terephathalic acid (TA) and hexachlorethane (HC) smoke.
Illuminating/infrared munitions: Mortars are produced by highly-skilled workers at the Arsenal and are designed to provide the U.S. Armed Forces an enhanced night-fighting capability increased by the effectiveness of night vision devices (NVDs).
Non-lethal munitions: Many munitions designed to provide friendly forces the capability to stop, contuse or bruise, disorient or momentarily deter a potential threat without the use of deadly force are being developed and/or produced at the Arsenal.
