The Arsenal’s administration building, also known as Prentiss Hall, was named for Brig. Gen. A.M. Prentiss, who served as the first commander following the establishment of the installation in Nov. 1941. He served until July 1945. The building was constructed in 1942.

Pine Bluff Arsenal is a world leader in the design, manufacture and refurbishment of smoke, riot control and incendiary munitions, as well as chemical/biological defense operations items. It serves as the group technology center for illuminating and infrared munitions and is also the only place in the Northern Hemisphere where white phosphorus munitions are filled.

Location:

Located 35 miles southeast of Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas, the Arsenal is 8.5 miles long by 2.75 miles wide and covers approximately 13,444 acres. It is bordered on the east by the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System and on the west by the Union Pacific Railroad, making it easily accessible by rail, road and water.

History:

Pine Bluff Arsenal was established on Nov. 3, 1941, by the War Department Chemical Warfare Service to manufacture and assemble incendiary munitions. In the intervening years, the Arsenal’s mission has expanded to make it unique among military installations.

During World War II, the mission expanded to include the manufacture and storage of chemical weapons and the filling of smoke and white phosphorus ammunition. A biological weapons mission was added in 1953, and continued until 1969.

The Arsenal was selected in 1978 as the national site for production of a new generation of binary chemical weapons; a program that remained active until 1990, when an international treaty mandated its end. Unique projects for disposal of all obsolete chemical weapons at Pine Bluff Arsenal have been underway since 1979, and successfully concluded in 2010.

Today, the Arsenal, under the command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command and the U.S. Army Joint Munitions Command, serves a critical need for the domestic production of illuminating, infrared, phosphorus and smoke munitions.

As the Center of Industrial and Technical Excellence for Chemical and Biological Defense Material, the Arsenal is responsible for a variety of products that save lives and protect our Soldiers, Sailors and Marines

Pine Bluff is America’s Arsenal, internationally recognized as an ISO 9001 quality manufacturer of specialty ammunition and chemical defense equipment for our military servicemembers and international allies.
